<image:title>What I love - what i love in may - a little life ~ hanya yanagihara – if there’s a niche literary genre for realistic fiction novels about people who live in manhattan and have devastating events occur in their lives, i must be among its most devoted fans (see also: the goldfinch, extremely loud & incredibly close). i’ve been tempted to include this book in my monthly favorites since late last year when i first picked it up at a bookstore in seattle. while i was enamored immediately, i’m glad i patiently waited to share until i fully absorbed its 800 page entirety. as the story unfolds, it continuously twists into shocking new dimensions of grief, beauty, pain, and the depth of human experience. as i read, it shifted and transformed in my hands, and again, and again. brace yourself for a heavy case study into the psyche of man and the lingering nature of trauma – but like everything, it’s not all darkness. yanagihara weaves the purest golden strings of friendship and unconditional love into her story, a constant push and pull and balance between the most painful sorrows and greatest joys that can be experienced in the ongoing act of being alive, all captured in her vivid, biting prose. it’s a weighty undertaking, but one that’s well worth it and will remain a part of you long after you put it down.</image:title>

<image:caption>north park is full of little gems, and lovesong is one of my favorites. the ambience is light and airy with its open storefront and sweet retro-aesthetic interior, making it a wonderful place to study or read a book. i recently spent a lovely hour there reading a used copy of harry potter that i picked up at verbatim books across the street (another north park treasure). in addition to all the staples, lovesong’s menu is full of novel flavor combinations; i tried the jack johnson latte (banana, maple, coconut) on my last visit and i highly recommend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>i have deep commitment issues when it comes to starting a tv series, but when i finally settled down for all six seasons of this classic, i couldn’t believe i hadn’t started sooner. the early-2000s fashion inspiration alone is enough to keep me hooked, not to mention the bustling new york city portrayal and the unapologetic delight in stereotypically feminine interests. also, there’s something to be said for the escapism of getting lost in someone else’s boy problems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Well being - bad art therapy - this is not to say we shouldn’t challenge ourselves and be motivated to improve at certain skills. i recently finished an introductory art course at my university where, after hours of focus, i created a few drawings that made me proud with their realism. the common factor throughout my best pieces? i was relaxed and not emotionally invested in the outcome of the drawings while i was creating them. this allowed me to tackle objects and textures that initially seemed much too daunting for my beginner skillset, and to then be happily surprised at the results just because i let myself create freely without pressure.</image:title>
